The "WINTER HILL SCRAPBOOK"

Winter Hill, near Bolton, Lancashire UK, has been held in affection, fascination and interest by many people over a long period of time. Although mention is made of Winter Hill in a variety of books and publications, there has been no book produced about the hill itself, its geology, ancient history, natural history, industrial archaeology etc .............. until NOW!

Two volumes of a book about Winter Hill have now been written and are available free on the Internet. A third Volume is currently being written and will be available just as soon as it's been completed - if it ever get's finished!.

Volume 1. (this volume is now complete and will not be added to except for slight alterations.

Volume 2. (this volume is now complete and will not be added to except for slight alterations)

Volume 3. Only 29 pages written so far (March 2005).

The Complete Book is now available as a one volume paperback book at lulu.com

NOTE: The ABOVE volumes are no longer being added to. As many people are now on broadband, ONLY the book below labelled "The complete book" is being added to. Will I be able to buy the book and how much will it cost.

For the past few years, the answer to this question has been a resounding "NO", it will never be published as a book. Unfortunately I have been endlessly asked to produce it as a real book by a large number of people so I have done it! The "original" version will STILL be available free of charge on the Internet- but it will never be updated! ALL "profits" from the published book are given to the Bolton Rescue Team. It can be purchased at Great House Barn & the Information Centre at Rivington, the Last Drop Gallery at Bromley Cross and at Horwich Heritage Centre. It it also available in either paperback or hardback (plus postage) from my publisher HERE.

Background to the book.

As the book was being written, it soon became obvious that other people had much more knowldge about the subject than the author, and so the idea grew, that the publication should be written not only by myself but by other people as well. The author will continue to add to the book as time permits, but if ANYONE wants to either add to change some information, or even to write an article for inclusion, then please get in touch with me at: d.lane@btinternet.com

When will it be completed?

How long is a ball of string! It will be completed either when I run out of either time or inclination to research and write any other articles, or when articles & comments from others dry up completely, and it's not worth producing another edition or "issue" of the book. I suggest you do NOT actually PRINT out a volume until such a time as it's clearly marked on this page as being COMPLETE.

What will be in the book?

Simply anything and everything I can find out about Winter Hill - so the more people who can send in a contribution the better! The book will contain "area by area" descriptions, walks, flaura & fauna, the springs, archaeology, geology, what to see, the coal mines, the brickworks ..... simply everything there is to know about the place .. all in one book. Take a look what's in it so far, and you'll get the idea. In time, hopefully, it should build up into something really worthwhile.

How long will it take to download the book?

Volume 1 is 6 MB in size, Volume 2 is 7.5 MB. With broadband, you should be able to download it in about 4 to 5 minutes. For those with lower speed internet it will take longer. The book labelled "The complete book" contains FAR more information than volumes 1, 2 & 3 combined.

If I want to add an article or correct facts which have already been written what do I do?

Just write to me at d.lane@btinternet.com (or get someone to do it for you) and your contribution will be added to the next "issue" of the book. If you know something that is not already in the book then THAT is the type of article that we need! This is OUR book, not mine. Please help!

What type of articles are wanted?

ANYTHING THAT IS NOT ALREADY IN THE BOOK. My particular interest is in mining history. Yours could be the varieties of sphagnum moss on the moors, the birds you can see, the insects there, your favourite walk, the "hidden" spots of Winter Hill, more about the biology, the springs of the hill, ruined farmhouses, how and where do I join the paragliders, model plane flyers etc that I see on the hill? This is OUR hill ... write about it! Send your contributions to d.lane@btinternet.com
